Early signs in 2025 – what will this year hold?

So were in week 3 of returning and it is becoming evident that the challenges of 2024 are not over just yet. Only today I searched for AWS jobs in Cardiff and unlike 2022 and 2023 I was shocked to see very little appearing on the page. Last year’s economic conditions, political instability, financial leading conditions, the instability in the financial service markets led to a somewhat subdued market as we all saw. Early signs suggest companies remain in the shadows and cautious, and many technology professionals are cautious to jump now unless they get their near perfect jobs.

I read now the UK’s GDP forecast to grow by 1.7%, double the growth rate of 2024. Lets hope this improvement could boost hiring activity.

Green shoots: –

  • The big 4 fight back – Google and Microsoft are investing heavily in the UK.
  • Financial Services: markets are improving, and AI opportunities are being forecast
  • Government investment in tech and innovation projects – seen by the AI data centre move here in Wales.
  • Tech Start-ups & Green Tech: Start-ups and scale-ups focused on AI and sustainability will continue to need talent.

The global economic outlook remains uncertain, and rising National Insurance costs in the UK could push companies to purge hiring plans due to significant increases in costs.

The AI letters keeping rearing their head continuously and who knows what impact it will have on recruitment – it still remains unclear. While AI is being used to assist in digital marketing, automation and administration it hasn’t yet seen the job losses we may have expected. It’s not all good either –  I do keep hearing that AI driven marketing whilst extremely time beneficial, can be deemed lazy and predictable. Some circles say the technology is developing rapidly, with machine learning and the bots mimicking true personas so we can hope that like the LinkedIn 2025 jobs showed AI-related roles could emerge in the very near future.

While 2025 may not be a breakout year for tech recruitment, the market remains dynamic, and employers and candidates need to stay adaptable as things can shift quickly.

For my business, diversification and adaptability are key so whilst I may not see increased demand for software engineers, devops engineers short term there is likely to be needs for AI, Cybersecurity and hey like 2024 demand for high level digital marketeers and things slightly different to what I have done for the last 4 years.

Bring it on!
